OHR w3/2

Treadmill run in SLC. Sucked. I couldn't get my heart rate under control - was up around 180 for most of the time. I was determined to get 30 minutes of running in though. Must have been the altitude that got to me. I also suspect that the treadmill was going faster than it said.

5 minutes - walk - easy
8 minutes - run - 5mph - HARD
2 minutes - walk
8 minutes - run - 5mph - HARD
2 minutes - walk
5 minutes - 4un - 4.5mph - hard to go that slow but better for lungs
5 minutes - walk
1.5 minutes - run - 4.8 mph
3.5 minutes - walk
1.5 minutes - 4un - 4.8 mph
3.5 minutes - walk
3 minutes - run - 4.8 mph
2 minutes - walk
3 minutes - run 4.8 mph
5 minutes - walk

OHR w3/1

I've made a decision to go with the One Hour Runner program. Not sure why - just finally decided.

I also decided that today is run 1 of week 3. Kind of arbitrary but feels about right.

So 5 minutes walk, 30 minutes jog, 5 minutes walk. Easy. With Mark. Kind of boring.

not the Christmas Classic 5K

We were signed up to run the Christmas Classic 5K this morning. Buckets of rain and 5 hours of sleep made me say no way.

I think I won't sign up for any runs in advance unless I'm sure of the weather - that's too much $$$ down the drain.

I did manage to get off the couch and go for a nice jog (alone) this afternoon. I tried to come up with a 5K route but the garmin died partway through so I ended up a little short. I enjoyed it though.

and some new gear!

new socks = excellent
new vest = excellent
new tights = not sure, but were appropriate for the weather

some days it is better to just go for a walk

I didn't feel like running today. After too many days in a row of nausea and heartburn I just couldn't bring myself to go jog - but I didn't want to waste the nice weather so we went for a long walk with Dessie.

It was beautiful.

b210k hybrid w1/3

today was much harder. muggy, warm, heavy, nauseous.

I had a feeling we went out too fast - and sure enough, average speed on first interval was 5.6 mph! at least there was a reason it sucked.

5+ minutes - walk
16 minutes - run
4 minutes - walk
16 minutes - run
5+ minutes - walk

next week I think we should just do 30 minute runs and then sunday we have another 5K. It will be interesting to see if we do any faster/slower/better/worse.

b210k hybrid w1/2

I think we're going to end up just making things up for a few weeks. Hopefully that isn't a bad idea.

Today we did this

5 minutes - walk
11 minutes - jog
1 minute - walk
11 minutes - jog
1 minute - walk
11 minutes - jog
walk home (6.5 minutes)

Dessie came with again, and she did pretty well. She has a hard time towards the end. Mark seemed to have a little bit of a hard time too but maybe that was just because he had the dog.

moving on - Bridge to 10K/One Hour runner hybrid w1/1

Lots of firsts today.

First day of new program. I've decided to combine the Bridge to 10K interval style program with the One Hour Runner. I couldn't decide between the two and didn't see the harm in combining them.

Today I did the first run of the B210K

5 min walk
10 min run
1 min walk
10 min run
1 min walk
10 min run
1 min walk (plus an extra minute)
10 min run
5 min walk (got home after 4 minutes)

It was the first run in a while that felt challenging so that's good.

More firsts - it was the first time we went in the rain. At first it was just sprinkling, then it rained hard. I don't prefer the rain.

And - we brought Dessie again! She did well but Mark decided to take her home after the 3rd 10 minute run so I was on my own in the end.

Here's to keeping going with this! And Rhonda - if you're reading this - GO RUN!!! :-)

C25K Final Run!!!

We did a 5k race! And it was easy! and fun! and chilly!

the 5K was much easier than I remember it being the first time through this program. Now I just have to figure out how to stay motivated and continue running.

But seriously - that was kind of fun.

I'm thinking of adjusting the one hour runner program to include some split times to keep it more interesting. Mark thinks we should just do this as is.

Weeks 1 – 3: 30 minutes, 3 days a week.

Week 4: Run 30 minutes, 29 minutes, 35 minutes.

Week 5: Run 30 minutes, 32 minutes, 38 minutes

c25k w9/2 take 2b

I could have been "done" today but Mark skipped the last run, and we have the little 5K coming up on Sunday so I think we'll just let that be the end of the program.

I'm ready to move on to something new - getting a little bored, but also feeling like this is easier.

I ordered tights! can't wait for them to come - putting shorts on when it is chilly isn't very inviting even though I'm warm enough once I get going.

Saturday, November 20, 2010

cw5k w9/2 take 2

I'm proud of myself for going today. Lots of rain forecast and the sky was blue so I actually got over my apathy and went. Mark didn't join me.

I think I went a little faster today - it is hard to tell from the garmin readout, but I had a higher average speed. And I felt nauseous.

next run is a 5k, and the post thanksgiving race is in a week.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

c25k w9/1 take 2

went at dusk - cool and beautiful night.

This is the first run that felt easy to me. I probably could be going faster, but it is just nice not to be struggling.

We signed up for another 5K on the sunday after thanksgiving. I hope it doesn't rain!

Friday, November 12, 2010

c25k w8/3 take 2

in NYC with Mark! Another two laps around the reservoir in Central Park. Sluggish, tired, post-debut but it was great to be outside.

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

c25k w8/2 take 3

In New York City! Ran around the reservoir in Central Park - lots of people doing the same.

We ended up bailing out of the Miles for Migraine 5K last weekend. After falling off the run-wagon for a few days I wasn't super motivated - and then I woke up to a torrential rain storm. It just wasn't happening.

I signed up for something else the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Hopefully that goal will stick.

Monday, November 1, 2010

c25k w8/2 take 2

back at home and running outside with Mark :-)

went down to the running path along Berry - what a nice place to run. And not too bad a run either.

Friday, October 29, 2010

c25k w8/1 take 2

one more treadmill run in Annville.

5 minutes @ 3.2 mph - easy
19 min. @ 5 mph - good
7 min. @ 5.1 mph - good
1.5 min @ 5.2 mph - good
1.5 min @ 5.3 mph - why not
5 min @ 3.2 mph - not long enough to cool down

it's getting fun again - or maybe watching the simpson's halloween special while running was fun...

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

c25k w7/3 take 2

on treadmill at LVC - hot and humid

5 min. @ 3.2 mph - easy
10 min. @ 5 mph - easy
5 min. @ 5.1 mph - good
10 min. @ 5.2 mph - good - probably would have been hard if the world series wasn't on
5 min @ 3.2 - easy

Much Much Better!

Monday, October 25, 2010

c25k w7/2 take 2

on treadmill in hotel. yuck.

4 min @ 3.2 mph
12.5 min @ 5.3 mph
2 min @ 3.2 mph
6.5 min @ 5.2 mph
2 min @ 3.2 mph
6.5 min @ 5.2 mph
4 min @ 3.2 mph

nauseous and bright red

Friday, October 22, 2010

c25k w7/1 take 2

on my own on tour - in a particularly grumpy mood - was happy to go run.

Sadly - on a treadmill. I hate treadmills.

5 minutes @ 3 mph
25 minutes @ 5.2 mph
5 minutes @ 3 mph

treadmills are really boring but they keep you going one speed, which is really nice. I'm maybe even looking forward to doing it again and seeing if I can handle it a tiny bit faster.

week 6/3 take 2

hey - 25 minutes wasn't that bad! We did get a much appreciated 2 minute break with only 3:45 to go to wait for caltrain - but really, not that bad at all.

Note to self - WEAR SUNGLASSES!!!

Friday, October 15, 2010

c25k w6/2 take 2b

I wasn't up for 25 minutes straight so we opted for another go at 10/3/10. I did a little better today - Mark said he thought it was a little harder than the last one.

Much cooler.

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

c25k w6/1 & 2 take 2

I guess I forgot to post about 6/1. We went for distance instead of time - that was kind of fun, although depressing to see that we're about one minute off the mark.

for 6/2 we went back to time - and it is still hot!

Nothing very exciting to report - my butt felt like it had lead in it, and the first 10 minutes were kind of hard. I think we may repeat this one before going on to 25 minutes - we'll see.

Friday, October 8, 2010

c25k w5/3 take 2

back to 20 minutes.

It's amazing how different it feels to think - oh wow, I can't believe I can do this vs. shit this is really hard, I should be doing better.

that plus it is hot today and I'm dehydrated and I had a cramp in my shoulder made today an unpleasant run. But we did it.

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

c25k w5/2 take 2

I guess I forgot to post after week 5/1 - I think it was fine. Hard to remember since it was a week ago. grrrr.

I really need to learn not to procrastinate. We had the water trials over the weekend, and that was a fairly good reason not to run - but then it took 3 more days to get going again. A week break doesn't help.

That said - 8 minutes x 2 only marginally sucked.

Monday, September 27, 2010

c25k w4/3 take 2

Very hot today - well, hot for here - probably about 80 when we headed out. I do not like running in heat. At all.

Friday, September 24, 2010

c25k week 4/2 take 2

better than the last one - hoping we've gotten back into the groove.

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

week 4/1 take 2 - GARMIN!

Our Garmin 305 came today. I think we're going to fight over it.

It's interesting how week 4 the first time around was exciting because I didn't think i could run for 5 minutes straight and it turned out I could. Now it is annoying because it was harder than I would have liked.

Moral of the story? don't quit for 6 weeks.

Sunday, September 19, 2010

week3/3 redux

much better. As long as we keep going I think it won't be too bad to get back up to 5K.

Hot and muggy and rainy today. The rain was kind of nice.

Wednesday, September 15, 2010

c25k w3/2 second time

Today sucked a little. wheezy, and felt heavy. But we're back on track so that's good.

Monday, September 13, 2010

starting over

after doing better than I thought possible - and completing the whole c25k program Mark and I did the predictable - and let life get in the way.

vacation, allergies, practicing, tour...

and now we're back. I signed us up for a 5k event so now we're obligated. I hope that works. Six and a half weeks away - so I decided to back us up to week 3.

90 seconds was easy. 3 minutes was harder. We tried to push the pace - I have no idea if we did. And now I feel dumb for having let so much time go by. It really isn't that hard, and it really does feel like it was worth it.

some runs aren't fun

Today I had my first lousy run. We have a great new route though and I am looking forward to having a good run on it.

I got light headed and nauseous - at one point I had to stop in the shade because I felt like I was going to pass out. Not sure if I'm just under the weather. I suspect I'm dehydrated. And I think I'm also feeling the effects of a less regular schedule.

I hope the next run is better.

week 9/2 and 9/3

I forgot to post something last week after running - we did the second week 9 run on July 12 - early evening. It was nice.

Today we went for distance instead of time - and ran 3.11 miles in 37.5 minutes. It was ok - definitely was ready to be done at the end, but we completed the 5K!!!! YAY! Now to figure out what to do next to keep me interested in running.

I wasn't sure we'd make it through - it took us 11 weeks or so, but we did it.

and I've decided that we'll go for the one hour runner program next. it looks like this:

Weeks 1 – 3: 30 minutes, 3 days a week.

Week 4: Run 30 minutes, 29 minutes, 35 minutes.

Week 5: Run 30 minutes, 32 minutes, 38 minutes

Week 6: Run 30 minutes, 33 minutes, 41 minutes

Week 7: Run 30 minutes, 34 minutes, 45 minutes

Week 8: Run 30 minutes, 36 minutes , 49 minute

Week 9: Run 30 minutes, 38 minutes, 54 minutes

Week 10: Run 30 minutes, 40 minutes, 60 minutes

For weeks 1-4 I think we should do 5K for the final run instead of just 30 minutes. And maybe I'll look for a race for the end of week 4.

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

week 9/1

I don't have anything to say except that I'm worried sick about Mini and didn't want to run. But we did. no picture.

Monday, July 5, 2010

week 8/3

another 28 minutes done - and not too bad. I'm started to get frustrated that our distances aren't increasing. I guess the thing now is to just keep going, and after we are comfortable with 30 minutes we'll figure out how to improve speed.

Best thing about today - I remembered to pee before going. That's a big improvement.

Friday, July 2, 2010

week 8/2

today wasn't so nice. We went after getting bad news about Mini - and really only went out of obligation to the program. I'm glad that I did it, but my heart wasn't in it. We didn't even take the ipod - and we stopped at lights instead of running in place or changing course. It felt like about the right length but the distance was short of what we had done before.

Oh well. At least we went.

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

week 8/1

WE RAN 28 MINUTES STRAIGHT!!!!

Tonight was nice - the latest we've gone, and cool and not crowded. My back hurt, which sucked. I'm just amazed we're still at it and it is going well.

Woohoo!!!

here are pictures. I'm starting to notice a difference - I have muscles in my legs and I don't recognize some other parts :-)

week 7/3

Nice to be back home and running with Mark - far less boring.

I got nauseous half way through - had to stop for a few minutes. Kata says this happens to her all the time. I think I was hot and hungry and needed to pee.

Next week we move up to 28 minutes. And there are only two weeks left - hard to believe.

Friday, June 25, 2010

week 7/2

somehow trudged through 25 minutes. I think I was probably barely moving - but I did it.

Massive allergy attack :-(

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

week 7/1

On my own in Arcata, CA. The days at Sequoia are incredibly long - 15 hours of nonstop stuff. I was lucky to escape for an hour to run - and it was the first instance of using the time to blow of steam. I did fine, running on rural roads past goats and cows. It was nice.

No pictures because I'm not home.

And I don't know what Mark ended up doing.

Saturday, June 19, 2010

week 6/3

Back home - had to convince Mark it was time to go - and so we went. Ran 25 minutes! 2.25 miles. And it was fine.

No puppy.

Both of us felt sluggish and tired - but were pretty happy with ourselves by the end.

Not sure how I'm going to fit it in at least twice at Sequoia.

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Week 6 - not run 3

I'm in Banff. There was no way I was going to be able to run 25 minutes straight so I just went to Sally Borden and did what I could.

5 minutes walk @ 3 mph - fine
1 minute run @ 6 mph - ouch
4 minutes run @ 5 mph - heart beating way too fast
2.5 minutes walk @ 3 mph - fine
5 minutes run @ 5 mph - fine
2.5 minutes walk @ 3 mph - fine
5 minutes run - started at 5 mph, and raised it little by little, did the last 25 seconds @ 6 mph - that was kind of fun
4 minutes walk cool down

I did better than I thought I would but I didn't enjoy it much. I hate treadmills.

Mark did 5 minutes walking/8 run/3 walk/8 run/5 walk - he seemed fine

Friday, June 11, 2010

week 6/2

10 minutes/3 minutes/10 minutes

The first 10 felt fast - but when I mapped it it looks like it was about the same as the 20 minute run - I had to slow down big time for the second 10 because I overheated.

heat sucks.

Dessie did well again - hopefully she just needs treats for motivation :)

Next run is in Banff. I'm worried that will really suck.

Wednesday, June 9, 2010

week 6/1

today was easy. Not super easy walk in the park easy - but - didn't feel much like work.

We brought Dessie again - and this time had treats. Treats help a lot!

And new duds! I like my shorts a lot. This is my favorite shirt and it is ancient, didn't realize it is see through. Mark has a new shirt too - kind of star treky but nice. And I got a waist pouch thingy that doesn't help with the ipod but would work for keys and cash.

All in all pretty sweet.

week 5/3

I just ran 2 miles. I don't think I have ever in my entire life run 2 miles. WOW.

It wasn't easy but it wasn't awful either - I think if had been a little cooler it might have seemed less hard. I'm really proud. And sweaty.

Friday, June 4, 2010

week 5/2

muggy out there today - it is a very good thing we don't usually have humidity. My running days would be numbered.

Today was a little harder, but harder like - wow, I accomplished something - harder, not impossible. I have a feeling we're going to do the rest of this sans Dessie. It is just easier on us.

Next run - 20 minutes. Really?

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

week 5 / 1

WOW! I had kind of a crap day today and the run tonight was actually fun. 5 minutes went by easily - not out of breath once, really very nice.

No dog. Not sure what I think of that - it might just be easier to go without her until we get faster.

Looking forward to adding time :-)

Week 4/4

Today was a lesson in what not to do.

Don't take the dog if you don't feel like dealing with an obstinate pain in the ass.

Don't eat a big sandwich an hour before you go running.

Don't forget sunglasses if it is sunny.

Don't touch the ipod. Just let it do its thing - if you restart the podcast in the middle of the last 5 minute run you'll be very frustrated.

Today was a disaster. And here I was repeating a week 4 run to hopefully go a little faster and be more ready for week 5. HAH!

Here is a recap of today, interval by interval.

5 minute walk - fine
3 minute run - 1 minute in Dessie decides she must pee in a very specific spot. I paused the podcast to allow her to pee, then we went on the rest of the 2 or so minutes.
1.5 minute walk - fine
5 minute run - OMG DESSIE WAS A PAIN!!!! I had to stop running (and pause the podcast) to give her a very stern talking to. After that she was fine, stayed right with me.
2.5 minute walk - fine
3 minute run - pretty much hopeless, I had to drag Dessie along to keep her from looking for road snacks. Made it 3 minutes without stopping but I was frustrated.
1.5 minute walk - fine, and I extended it a little to get to a street corner and avoid having to stop at a light.
5 minute run - first minute was ok, then Dessie absolutely HAD to pee again - and then I somehow reset the podcast to the beginning at which point I was ready to give up - but didn't - probably ran another 3 minutes, dragging Dessie the whole way. Really really frustrating.

walk home was probably an extra 2 minutes or so...

top that off with a side cramp for about half the time and my right foot is still bothering me.
Not a fun run at all.

Thursday, May 27, 2010

week 4/3

Today I decided not to go running - that I would do it tomorrow, but then I had the idea that if I went today and it was hard, I could get in another week 4 run before Mark gets home and we could start week 5 together. Good plan?

Anyway - I think the run would have been a piece of cake, except Dessie was a total pain today. This is the first time I took her on my own and she doesn't want to run with me. I think I go too slow for her - so she'd just as soon walk. Or maybe she just wanted to sniff. I don't know. But I think it would have been way easier for me to go on my own. I might still do my original plan - and redo this run on Saturday by myself to see if I can go a little faster.

I'm wondering if Mark has managed to do a treadmill run in Banff. I don't have high hopes.

But all in all - the third time around of week 4 was not hard. I was mostly trying to get Dessie to pick up her pace which was annoying.

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

week 4/2

I so didn't want to go today. Tired from recording. Mark isn't here - and it is rainy and overcast. But I went and once again, it didn't entirely suck. I didn't go as far as I on week 4/1 - maybe Mark pushes me to go faster or maybe we just had better luck with the timing of lights. The run itself was easier for the first half, and maybe about the same for the second.

Sunday, May 23, 2010

not a running day

Tomorrow I'm going to be in the recording studio from 9 am until 9 pm and I am seriously thinking about getting up and doing week 4/2 before we leave in the morning. Does this mean I've become an addict?

I won't do it - because that would mean getting up at 6:30 when I could get up at 7:30 and 7:30 is just much nicer, but I am still thinking about it...

Saturday, May 22, 2010

Week 4/1

I wasn't sure I'd be able to do this one - but WE DID IT!!! All of us. And it didn't suck.

Observations? 5 minutes is way longer than 3. Running into the wind isn't fun but dogs like it.

Not much else to add. I never want to go. Then we go and I'm glad we did. I really hope the 5 minutes gets easier by the end of the week. And I'm glad my mind obsesses over little bits of music because the opening of In the Garden played over and over and over while I was doing the 5 minute run.

Here are the pics.

week 3/3

Hey - today was easy! Dessie stepped on glass :-( and I felt a little woozy - needed to go earlier or eat more.

Dare I say it - I am looking forward to this getting more challenging!

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Week 3/2

I am continually surprised and happy that this running thing doesn't totally suck. Today was almost easy - and I felt like I could have done another set of intervals. I still don't feel like going initially but then I find myself looking forward to the next run.

I am considering entering us in the SF Marathon's 5K on July 25. I want to make it through a longer run than 3 minutes first.

Sunday, May 16, 2010

Week 3/1

Not so hard!!! After watching the Bay to Breakers runners I'm certain we look like banana slugs when we run though.

New shoes = good. Not sure if I'm in love with them but they're good.

Not much else to say - I'm just glad it wasn't horrid. I do want to keep track of our progress so here are some statistics.

CW weight: 128
MW weight: 172

And here are our post-run pics

is it really just about shopping?

So I've started running. Not only have I started running, but I've dragged Mark into it - and Dessie comes along because Dessie is a dog and dogs like to GO WITH.

We're about to start week 3 of the Couch to 5K program and I'm nervous I won't be able to do it. But we spent today getting new shoes. I'm usually extremely happy and excited to try on shoes but today was a different experience. Running shoe stores are crazy. I don't want to go to one again for a very long time. And I can't afford to go to one again for a very long time so hopefully our purchases were good ones.

I got these: http://bit.ly/9M9IOy

and Mark got these: http://bit.ly/b9Nre0

We went to two fancy running stores and 2 discount stores + I looked at a bunch of places online. I'm hoping the choices are good ones. Mark ended up with a full size larger than he usually wears. Mine are my regular size, although the shoe guy at the first store wanted me to go up a size. Kata says I'll know if I made the right decision based on how many toenails turn black. My toenails have only just returned to normal after last summer's Cascade hike so I'm hoping for zero black nails.

Summary of the first two weeks of this running program? The first week was really easy for me and I did it on my own. The second week was harder and not as fun - but I had a cold and I'm hoping that is why. Mark & Dessie started coming with me for week 2. Dessie really seems to like it, and Mark is into it too. He says he is feeling better already. I don't know if I feel any better. I think that's because I've been sick.

Last night I had really horrible foot pain that kept me up most the night. It reminded me of some pain I had after the cascade hike - at the base of my big toe. Hopefully the new shoes will take care of that.

Tomorrow I'm going to start taking beginning of week pictures. Maybe by seeing a week by week picture we'll know if we're progressing at all. I also want to figure out how to put music under the podcasts so I don't get bored if I go by myself. But maybe that won't be an issue if Mark keeps coming with!

I still can't believe we've started in on this. I guess it was only a matter of time.
